The Anglican Parish in Lismore engaged us to fix some decking boards at St. Marks Church in Nimbin as the nails rusted through, the boards came loose and where a trip hazard. We were unable to fix these board with even 3 inch nails. Further inspection showed that the actual issue was a rotten substructure underneath. Mind you the old porch has only been there for 120 years.
The Parish agreed on the fact that we had to do something about the state of affair and we replaced all rotten bits with new hardwood. Sealed end grains and sealed mortise and tenon connection will prevent water soaking in the timber and will extend its lifetime considerably. The choice of decking in this case is spotted gum, stained with a water based decking product.
